Fifty Shades of Your New Life After Divorce - The Huffington Post

How many of you have read Fifty Shades of Grey? If you haven't yet, you must.

Over my vacation last week, I decided to catch up on my pleasure reading which included the Fifty Shades trilogy, and I am so glad I did. Not because of the sex, which was fabulously fun to read, but more importantly, because the underlying messages of the book are those that are in alignment with all that I stand for.

The books, which most will say are simply erotica for the middle aged, is really a love story, and one that touches upon the very core of what effortless, extraordinary love is all about.

Yes, the book is deliciously erotic. Yes, the book touches upon sexual content that is edgy and may be outside of our comfort zone. Yes, the book is exaggerated and extreme in its story. However, the messages are, in my opinion, critical to the success of any good relationship.

I feel that the most significant message of the book is that things are not always what they seem.

This is a story of two seemingly unsuited individuals who, over time, prove that they are more of an ideal fit than they could have ever imagined.

We all come with baggage, especially after divorce. We develop our own "fifty shades of divorce" and these fifty shades become part of the fabric of our lives as well as the experience that best prepares us for our next chapter.

The relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is one that allows the reader to take their own discomfort with how they think they would handle their situation and view it relative to how Christian and Anastasia's relationship grows and evolves.

Extraordinary love is created when we engage and communicate with our lover/partner with curiosity and compassion. When our curiosity about why someone does what they do outweighs our need to judge them. When our desire to understand outweighs our need to react.

The book creates a relationship that is built on the curiosity and compassion shared between Christian and Anastasia and we watch as they question and challenge each other and their "baggage" with humor, desire and passion.

They are each more interested in learning about each other and what motivates their actions, behaviors and words than they are about pushing each other away because of discomfort and fear.

Moving through and forward after divorce is an experience that can become our defining story if we let it and can sometimes leave us feeling emotionally reactive and protective.

As we create and attract new relationships after divorce -- with our ex, with our children, and with new lovers -- leading with curiosity and compassion will ultimately open the door to extraordinary experiences.

I won't give away the ending, but I will tell you that what happens between them is only possible because they are both willing to:

1. Use the truth and experiences of their past as opportunities to grow and evolve, becoming a catalyst for change; and

2. Look past the way things might "seem" with a desire to understand and to unleash the potential in each other.

As you move forward through and after your divorce, remember that things are not always what they seem. There are always reasons why people act the way they do, say the things they do and react the way they do. If you approach every situation with curiosity and compassion, you will not only discover what is really going on beneath the surface, but you will discover how to communicate in a way that will get you exactly what you want!

Elaborate Portland wedding proposal goes viral

(AP) ? A video of a Portland man's elaborate, choreographed marriage proposal to his girlfriend has notched 5 million hits on YouTube ? and raised the bar for unmarried men everywhere.

The video, shot last week near the home of Isaac Lamb's parents, begins with his brother tucking Lamb's girlfriend, Amy Frankel, into the back of an SUV with a pair of headphones.

The song "Marry You" by Bruno Mars starts to play as the SUV drives slowly down the street, and friends and neighbors begin appearing before Frankel, lip-synching and dancing to the music. Eventually about 60 people are serenading Frankel in the street.

Lamb told NBC's "Today" show that the proposal was nothing new for the couple, both actors who are used to elaborate stunts.

Asked by host Ann Curry if he wanted to apologize to other single men out there for upping the proposal ante, Lamb laughed and replied: "Guys, I'm sorry. That wasn't my intention."

Frankel, by the way, said yes.

The Same, Only More ? Figment of My Cogitation

My husband and I live a pretty simple life by American standards. The way we do things is equal parts destiny (teacher?s salary) and design. We drive old Toyotas, don?t have cable TV, and stay in our iffy neighborhood because the mortgage is paid off. The house is small, so we have to keep the volume of our possessions under control. Both our wardrobes fit into one 6-foot closet and two dressers.?After?recycling and composting, we only toss out one kitchen-size bag of trash per week. I?ve been out of the workforce for years and that, too, was a choice. Less income but more time. It works for us.

With the money we save in other areas, we make travel a priority. If I want to see my family back East, I go. When Mike lost a close friend a few months ago and needed to fly to Kentucky, he went. Last week, we flew to Texas to visit friends.

Over the years, their family has done well in business so when we visit, we enter a very different world where people are polished, well-dressed, and comfortable socializing. In contrast, I spend most of my days alone, writing at my computer in clothes too shabby to wear to the grocery store. My circle of friends can be counted on my fingers and toes, with toes left over. I don?t think about these differences often, but prepping for a stay in someone else?s home always stirs up a few minor insecurities that cause me to wonder if my jewelry looks cheap and how I will answer when someone asks what I do all day.

For the five days of our visit, we lived in great abundance. Both (!) refrigerators and the pantry were always full. The bar was well-stocked.?The house is three times the size of ours, although it also contains more people. During our visit, the flow of extended family was ongoing, peaking with a luncheon and baby shower that included about two dozen guests. Lots of conversation, lots of kids, lots of activity. If anyone noticed my lack of pedicure or thought my purse was tacky, they were far too decent and well-bred to let on.

Unlike at home, I used the clothes dryer with abandon, did not recycle the paper tube when the toilet paper ran out, and tossed away Ziploc bags instead of washing them. I luxuriated under a shower head that wasn?t the least bit water-saving. We rode in a comfortable car, ate in excellent restaurants and drank wine by the bottle, instead of by the glass. It was lovely.

It was lovelier still to realize that I didn?t feel the tiniest speck of envy.

Now at home again, I notice that we have more fur lurking in the corners of our house than our friends do because we have more pets.?There is more empty space inside our (one) fridge, but there are also more blank spots in our schedules.?We have more tofu as well as more chocolate. We watch more geeky documentaries, although there is a lot more quiet for those of us who need that, too.

We have everything: a house, transportation, clothes, food, family and friends. We even get to take vacations once in awhile. Some people have more of those things, or perhaps they have a newer, bigger version, but we?re doing fine. While other people?s lives are fun to visit, we don?t wish for what they have. Except maybe their DVR. That would be cool.

Communication In A Relationship | Dating and relationship tips and ...

Communication is a vital part of our lives: a typical day involves many interactions between ourselves, our work colleagues and clients, our children, our friends, our ex?s, future relationships, etc. This interaction takes place where we live, work, relax, socialize and wherever we perform routine tasks.

Communication skills are critical for building healthy relationships, especially when one realizes that one of the most common causes of relational breakdown is a lack of communication. Just as communication can be the most important part of a relationship; arguments can be the most destructive aspect ? the closer we are to someone, the more easily we can bruise or be bruised. There is very little truth in the saying: ?Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me.? It?s not what we say, but rather how we say it, that most often hurts another person.

Do you identify with any of these statements?

?He never listens to me when I talk!?

?She talks and talks, but never actually says anything!?

?It?s like talking to a brick wall?

?I can?t get through to you?

?We can?t talk about anything important without getting into a fight?

?She?s too emotional ? she?s either crying or shouting or complaining. It?s easier to avoid her?

?He always gets defensive when I try to talk about issues?

Communication is a complex process; of which speaking only makes up for 10-20%. The other 80-90% is made up by facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, etc.

Communication is the art/ science of transferring a thought/ idea/ information from the mind of one complex human being to the mind of one or more complex human being(s). For communication to be effective, it must be a two-way process.

Dynamics of Interpersonal Communication

1. Facts: are both people communicating about the same set of facts? Try to separate the facts from thoughts or feelings.

2. Interpretations, Thoughts or Perceptions: Each person interprets a fact differently based on their belief system, personality, values and experience.

3. Feelings: how we are feeling, our current mood and frame of mind, etc can sub-consciously affect decisions and thoughts.

4. Intentions, Needs or Wants: hidden agendas; are we looking for comfort, clarification, information or simply a chance to interact? We judge ourselves on our intentions.

5. Actions: choice of words (is the intent to create harm?) + tone of voice + non-verbal speech = body language, posture, eye contact, facial expressions, etc.

?The medium is the message? => the way the message is delivered is the message itself.

6. Self: The communication centre, which includes the issue, topic or conflict at hand, has been ?filtered? by the facts, interpretations, thoughts, feelings, intentions, and choices of behaviour / actions.

Listening and Feedback

Did I say what I meant to say? ? Invite feedback to clarify communication.

Someone who?s not listening lets their mind drift and is already preparing the next argument or opposing thought; inaccurate feedback or limited eye contact.

Listening is an active, not a passive process. When two people argue, they only hear ?what they want to hear?, not what?s actually said. This equates to the accusation of ?not listening?. Most couples start arguing and within 5 minutes are arguing about the way they are arguing.

Don?t argue when you?re angry ? you will not be able to listen objectively. Give yourself time to cool down and then broach the subject when you are in a more reasonable frame of mind.

It?s important to give feedback ? checking and confirming. Did I understand you correctly? Is this what you mean? I heard you say this: am I right? Feedback can be verbal / non-verbal e.g. a nod, smile, silence or a cold shoulder. No feedback is in itself a form of feedback.

If the words and actions contradict each other, it is better to believe the actions!

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution can either be Constructive or Destructive.

Destructive Style ? hinders or inhibits the conflict resolution process:

Confrontational (win or lose, blaming)

Sabotage (focus on weak points, shaming)

Manipulation (blackmail, withdrawal)

Giving in (passive, submissive)

Avoidance (denial, withdrawal)

Constructive Style ? trying to minimize the issues and avoiding the difficulties in resolving the problems:

Compromise (meet halfway, understanding)

Accommodate (open discussion, communication without confrontation)

Partnership (solutions, forgiveness, honesty)

When trying to resolve conflicts, try to clarify your goals, as you will probably share many of the same goals despite of your differences. Avoid bargaining, as this may lead to each party taking a rigid position which in turn can flare tempers.

When resolving conflicts, remember that their causes may run deep. Sweeping issues under the carpet isn?t going to work in the long term, as old baggage will be brought up each time an argument starts. Try to fully resolve each issue as it comes along. You may find the following method useful:

1. Ask the other person for their feelings. Your conflict probably isn?t about the issue that caused it to start in the first place. Don?t forget that your goal is sorting out the problem, not winning an argument!

2. Ask the other person to define the problem. Stick to solving one problem at a time, that way you can understand each problem as the other person sees it.

3. Express your own feelings. Be careful to word them carefully, for example use phrases such as ?I feel?? rather than ?I think you??

4. Define the problem as you see it. As your feelings come out, the solution may become clearer. Remember that by you listening to the other person; you will have set the tone for them to listen to you.

5. Create multiple solutions. Don?t go back to your original agenda. Aim to find alternative or creative solutions that reduce emotions and tension.

6. Rate the possible solutions. Remember that no one can force an unacceptable solution on the other.

7. Combine and create a mutually acceptable solution. Create something acceptable to both parties, if this doesn?t work ? go back to step 1 and ensure both parties are being totally honest.

8. Be sure both parties agree to work towards resolving the issue.

Troubleshooting For Problems in Communication

Control or Power Issues: Effective communication cannot take place if one person has ?control? over the other or where there is not mutual respect and equality of relationship. To stay in control leads to relational isolation as the underdog reacts in anger at being manipulated or belittled.

Triangulation: Do not bring in a third party to avoid direct confrontation. If you have a problem with someone, go directly to that person. Don?t dump your accusations on mutual friends or your children in the hope of winning support to balance the scales in your favour ? it leads to more substantial and long-lasting damage, especially when a child is used as a weapon between parents.

19 Steps to Effective Communication

1. See communication as an opportunity to praise, build-up, affirm, heal, support and give positive reinforcement, rather than to correct, criticise, tear down, hurt, wound, lash out at. Praise opens doors to further communication, while criticism shuts them down.

2. Remember that actions speak louder than words; non-verbal communication usually is more powerful than verbal communication. Avoid double messages in which the verbal and the non-verbal messages convey something contradictory. (Credibility gap)

3. Define what is important and stress it; define what is unimportant and de-emphasise or ignore it. Avoid fault-finding.

4. Communicate in ways that show respect for the other person?s worth as a human being. ?Avoid statements which begin with the words ?You never ?? or ?I think you ??.

5. Be clear and specific in your communication. Avoid vagueness.

6. Be realistic and reasonable in your statements. Avoid exaggeration and sentences which begin with ?You always ??

7. Test all your assumptions verbally by asking if they are accurate. Avoid acting until this is done.

8. Recognize that each event can be seen from different points of view. Avoid assuming that other people see things like you do. (Perception)

9. Recognize that your family members and close friends are experts on you and your behaviour. Avoid the tendency to deny their observations about you ? especially if you are not sure.

10. Recognize that disagreement can be a meaningful form of communication. Avoid destructive arguments.

11. Be honest and open about your feelings and viewpoints. Bring up all significant problems even if you are afraid that doing so will disturb another person. Speak the truth in love. Avoid sullen silences.

12. Do not put down and/or manipulate the other person with tactics such as ridicule, interrupting, name-calling, changing the subject, blaming, bugging, sarcasm, criticism, pouting, guilt-inducing, etc. Avoid the one-upmanship game.

13. Be more concerned about how your communication affects others than about what you intended. Avoid getting bitter if you are misunderstood.

14. Accept all feelings and try to understand why others feel and act as they do. Avoid the tendency to say, ?you shouldn?t feel like that.?

15. Be tactful considerate and courteous. Avoid taking advantage of the other person?s feelings.

16. Ask questions and listen carefully. Avoid preaching or lecturing.

17. Do not use excuses. Avoid falling for the excuses of others.

18. Speak kindly politely and softly. Avoid nagging yelling or whining.

19. Recognize the value of humour and seriousness. Avoid destructive teasing.

Summary

As you look ahead to new relationships, you need to be able to break old and faulty communication patterns to allow for healthier interaction. The use of praise and positive reinforcement will reconstruct wounded and broken self-images and will build self-esteem, particularly in children. By becoming an effective communicator, you will also grow and become a better person which will positively enhance all your relationships.

The other four states that have legalized gay marriage?New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and New Hampshire?have done it more recently, somewhere between 2008 and 2011. But from the little data we have, it looks as if the pattern will be more or less the same?a temporary jump in marriage followed by a return to virtually the same marriage rates as before gay marriage became legal. Washington, D.C., which started accepting same-sex marriages in March 2010, saw a huge 61.7 percent increase in marriage that year, though it?s too soon to see where it will settle. Again, no signs of the coming apocalypse.

What Is It?

Image: Courtesy of Hari Manoharan Stanford University/SLAC, mota.stanford.edu

The honeycomb lattice is one of nature?s favorite patterns. In the two-dimensional crystal of carbon atoms known as graph?ene, for instance, the honeycomb structure arises from bonds among the atoms. Kenjiro K. Gomes of Stanford University and his colleagues have learned to make a honeycomb material in a striking new way. They place carbon monoxide molecules at regular intervals on the surface of a copper crystal, creating an imitation graphene layer. (The added molecules appear as black dots.)

By tweaking the pattern, the researchers can investigate how variations of small-scale structure change a material?s electric properties. In the image at the left, a slightly deformed honeycomb lattice forces the electrons to behave as if they were subjected to intense magnetic fields. Such ?designer materials? may lead to the discovery of new and exotic physics.

Nicole Brobeck And Curtis Braxton, Disabled Couple, Get Fairy-Tale Wedding Thanks To The Generosity Of Strangers

Defying the odds, Nicole Brobeck and Curtis Braxton have found their happily-ever-after. Last week, the disabled couple from California enjoyed a fairy-tale wedding thanks to the generosity of strangers, TODAY reports.

According to their wedding website, Brobeck and Braxton met in 2007 as participants in a living skills program for disabled adults. Brobeck, 28, who has cerebral palsy, said she found Braxton both sweet and funny.

Before long, a friendship developed and they began spending hours talking on the phone.

Braxton, 33, has hydrocephalus and a seizure disorder. Both he and Brobeck have mild cognitive impairments and neither can walk unaided.

But nothing could prevent their love from blossoming.

"Mom said that once I got my first kiss from Curtis that we never stopped kissing. So for 5 years now, he has been my best friend, my love and soon to be husband," Brobeck wrote on the couple's wedding website before the big day.

Braxton proposed last Valentine's Day. For Brobeck, it was a dream come true.

"Ever since I was a kid, I always kind of wanted someone to come and take me away to his kingdom, probably to escape all of the reality and heartbreak I was going through day after day," Brobeck told TODAY.

Brobeck, who lost her beloved father to a short and sudden illness just three weeks before meeting Braxton, said on her wedding website that she believes her dad sent Braxton to her from heaven.

"I liked the fact that when he looked at me, he didn?t see my disability first and vice versa," said Brobeck of her new husband.

The couple tied the knot this month, thanks in large part to an outpouring of generosity from strangers. Vendors donated thousands of dollars worth of fresh flowers, photography services, table linens, a wedding cake, a honeymoon hotel stay and more after being moved by the couple?s story.

"Our feeling is that those kids deserve what they?re getting," said flower broker Jon Gomez, who played a central role in organizing donations. "I kind of fell in love with this little girl? She calls me her fairy godfather."

Brobeck's mother, Cheryl Young, who shares a home with the couple in Concord, Calif., said the wedding was a "beautiful and magical" affair -- a testament to the love her daughter has found.

"Love is exactly what it?s always been and it?s there for anyone whose heart is open," Young told TODAY. "There is no disabled love. There is only true love. And they have it."

The Braxtons are one of several newlywed couples this year who have shown that love can break all boundaries.

In February, The Huffington Post reported that Dana Johnson, a 100-year-old woman, married her 87-year-old sweetheart. Also that month, Larry Bushnell and Columba Rosaly tied the knot despite a daunting language barrier that initially required them to communicate using an online translation service.

Influential banjo player Doug Dillard passes away

(AP) ? Doug Dillard, an influential banjo player who helped shape rock 'n' roll and introduce the nation to bluegrass music during a popular run on "The Andy Griffith Show," died Wednesday in Nashville. He was 75.

Lynne Robin Green, president of Dillard's publishing company, said he died due to a lung infection.

Dillard, a founding member of family band The Dillards out of Salem, Mo., was influential in several ways. Dillard, his brother Rodney and two band mates moved west in 1962, rather than taking the usual route to Nashville. They discovered the burgeoning folk scene in Southern California and helped inspire the country rock movement. They were among the first to attempt to modernize bluegrass music, electrifying their instruments and experimenting with rock elements.

Dillard also helped introduce bluegrass to TV viewers as a member of the unusual family band "The Darlings," who made multiple appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show" in the mid-1960s. He split with the band in the late '60s and eventually began a solo career.

The Dillards were inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2009.

The group influenced and worked with key members of the Southern California rock scene who spread their ideas to bands like The Eagles, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. John McEuen of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was 16 when he first met Dillard.

Junior Seau's garage burglarized

(AP) ? Police say a thief burglarized the garage of Junior Seau's Oceanside, Calif., home days after the former NFL star's suicide.

A burglar crawled through a doggy door into Seau's garage at about 2 p.m. on May 7.

Lt. Leonard Mata tells the North County Times (http://bit.ly/IWuGZe) that the crook rummaged through cabinets and stole a $500 bicycle belonging to a friend of Seau.

No arrest has been made.

Seau shot himself to death in the home on May 2.

Neighbor Sean Bailey tells TV station KGTV (http://bit.ly/KNer2P ) that a break-in after such a tragedy is "sick and disgusting."

Seau was a mainstay of the San Diego Chargers' defense in the 1990s after starring at Southern California. He was 43.

'Unintended Consequences': Former Bain Exec ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

In, Unintended Consequences: Why Everything You've Been Told About the Economy Is Wrong, Edward Conard sets out to provide "a prescription for how to grow the economy."

Thanks to a recent NY Times Magazine article, and because he worked closely with GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney at Bain Capital, Conard has become a lightning rod for controversy -- described by some as a champion of income inequality.

There are elements of this in Conard's book -- such as when he argues the societal benefits of economic competition is closer to 20-to-1 -- meaning society gets $20 of value for every $1 an investor earns -- vs. the 5-to-1 level commonly cited. But, in reality, Conard's book is pretty standard conservative economic fare wrapped with a philosophical view that is unique, at least in its public expression.

"Underneath the book is a moral argument," he says. "Talented people have a responsibility to get the training they need to be successful risk takers and go out there to take risks. What I see is surplus of talented people and a shortage of people willing to take the risks."

As a result, policymakers ought to "be cautious about lowering the payouts for successful risk taking," he says. "If we do that, we can slow down the growth rate of the economy."

Given this is an election year ? and Conard is raising money for Mitt Romney ? these are fighting words and, some say, an insight into how Romney thinks.

Conard stresses that he doesn't speak for the candidate and has no formal role in Romney's campaign. But as you might imagine, he worries about President Obama's promises (or threats) to raise taxes on the wealthy.

"Europe and Japan have been very unsuccessful producing the kind of innovation we have produced," he said. "I caution against heading in that direction."

Indeed, it's hard to a imagine any nation other than America spawning a company like Facebook ? much less a company like Instragram being acquired (by Facebook, ironically) for $1 billion less than two years after its founding.

What's true for companies is also true of individuals; actor Will Smith made a similar observation in a recent interview on French TV. "I'm a black man who didn't go to college and yet I get to travel around the world and sell my movies," he said. "I believe very firmly America is the only place on earth that I could exist."

What's lost in much of the discussion about Conard's book is the difference between true risk-takers and wealthy people. While I agree society should reward risk-takers, I'm not sure the same applies to people who've already amassed great wealth.

Most entrepreneurs aren't wealthy, especially when they start out. In our "Driven" series for Yahoo! News, I met many Americans who are true risk-takers; people either gave up solid jobs to pursue their dreams or folks who literally had nothing to lose, so they took their shots.

Then there are people who have already achieved great wealth, either through their own talents and labor or thanks to the success of their predecessors. Typically speaking, these people are not prone to take great risks, in part because they have so much to lose.

But Conard doesn't make a big distinction, suggesting there are people who take "career risks" by leaving their jobs to start a company, and people who take "financial risk" by supporting those entrepreneurs.

About the only time he was at a loss for words is when I asked him if Mitt Romney is still taking risks and thus deserves to pay a tax rate based on the carried interest tax deduction paid by private equity funds, or whether that rate itself is fair.

"I try not to delve too deep into policy," he says. "We have made a decision in our economy to lower taxes on successful risk-taking and have been very successful relative to Europe and Japan."

While that's undoubtedly true, we've also got a society that's increasingly broken into the "haves" and the "have nots" and Conard seems much more concerned about the former vs. the latter.

Will Jennifer Lopez Leave American Idol?

Hollie Cavanagh may have been eliminated from American Idol last night, but a great deal of buzz surrounding the show afterward centered on Jennifer Lopez and, specifically, her very sexy rendition of "Dance Again."

Alongside boyfriend Casper Smart.

"I don't think we'd work together if we didn't work well together," Lopez told Ryan Seacrest this morning about grinding all up on her 25-year old man in front of millions. "It has to be easy or it's not worth it."

Jennifer Lopez, Boyfriend on Stage

Lopez her certainly made her two years on American Idol worthwhile, using them to kickstart what had been a floundering music career.

So we'll see back for season 12, right? Not so fast. Let the contract negotiating begin

"I don't know," J. Lo said. "I have some movie things in the works and I have the tour. I love the show and it hurts me to think about not doing it, but I'm just taking it kind of day by day. We'll see."

Do you want to see Jennifer Lopez as an American Idol judge on season 12?

Apple claims Samsung willfully spoiled evidence pertinent to court cases

Earlier this month, Apple filed a complaint with a California judge claiming that Samsung was intentionally destroying documents relevant to their ongoing legal spat. Apparently Samsung only handed over a small number of documents that they were ordered to provide, and Apple claims that deleting e-mails is standard practice for Samsung even when they're in the middle of a lawsuit.

European court refuses Abu Qatada appeal

LONDON (AP) ? Radical Islamist cleric Abu Qatada on Wednesday lost his bid to make a final appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against a British deportation order, effectively clearing the way for the U.K. to resume efforts to expel him to Jordan.

A European Court of Human Rights review panel refused to hear Abu Qatada's challenge, marking a milestone in the legal wrangling over the alleged senior al-Qaida figure and effectively exhausting his efforts to have European judges intervene in the case.

That means Abu Qatada could be sent to Jordan within months ? though officials declined to offer any timetable ? mindful that Britain's efforts to remove the radical preacher have dragged for more than a decade.

"It is clearly our intention still to deport this man," said a spokesman for Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy.

The Palestinian-Jordanian preacher has been in detention since his arrest last month. His lawyers applied Wednesday for bail, though no date for that hearing has been set yet.

The ruling Wednesday by judges in Strasbourg clears the way for a fresh U.K. deportation hearing for Abu Qatada, who has been described in both Spanish and British courts as a leading al-Qaida figure in Europe, effectively handing the case back to British authorities.

Abu Qatada has fought attempts to expel him from the U.K. since 2001, alleging he would face torture in Jordan.

Home Secretary Theresa May said she remains confident that the new assurances from the Jordanian government that Abu Qatada would receive a fair trial mean that the U.K. will be able to put the cleric "on a plane and get him out of Britain for good."

Wednesday's decision was by the Grand Chamber of the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights. The panel of five judges rejected Abu Qatada's bid to have his appeal heard, declaring that a January ruling by another court chamber is now final.

Abu Qatada's legal team was challenging the court's decision that the preacher could be sent back to Jordan with diplomatic assurances that he would not be mistreated and that evidence gained through torture would not be used against him. The cleric faces a terrorism trial in Jordan over two bomb plots.

The Council of Europe, a 47-nation body that includes the ECHR, will continue to monitor how the case proceeds, according to the ruling Wednesday.

The review panel said that the Jan. 17 ruling by the ECHR's chamber was final. In that January ruling, the court said that the deportation of Abu Qatada could violate his right to a fair trial because of the "real risk" that evidence obtained through torture could be used at a re-trial in Jordan.

Since then, the British government has said it has received fresh assurances from Jordan that that would not happen.

British authorities re-arrested Abu Qatada ? whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman ? last month to begin new deportation efforts, believing a legal deadline for him to take his case to the human rights court's Grand Chamber had expired.

But in an embarrassment to the British government, Wednesday's ruling said the U.K. had been mistaken and had detained the cleric 24 hours too early.

Britain's Home Office said the country's Special Immigration Appeals Commission, a court that handles deportation and national security cases, would now hear the attempt to expel the cleric from the country.

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International U.K., expressed disappointment over the ruling and said that the human rights judges should have ruled on the strength of assurances from Jordan.

"Jordan has a known record of torturing detainees and conducting unfair trials," Allen said. "The simple truth is that Abu Qatada will be at personal risk of torture and of receiving an unfair trial in Jordan's State Security Court."
