Managing Mobile Devices in Business

Submitted by Jaymes Marsh on February 24, 2012 - 2:11 pm No Comment

So many companies are handing out smartphones and tablets to their employees - do these companies have a plan on how to manage all these mobile devices? It seems as though it was only yesterday when large companies issued BlackBerry?s to all their staff and demanded that they only use the company mobile device during business hours. The tide has turned and many organizations are finding their employees are no longer accepting these corporate-issued BlackBerry mobile devices as their only mobile option. More and more employees are using their own smartphones for business purposes, with Android and iPhone at the forefront. Smartphone use is on the rise with research giant?Nielsen?projecting that half of all sold U.S. mobile phones by 2012 will be smartphone devices. With this increase, how do companies envisage managing their mobile devices?

It?s not just the employees that have realized the importance of mobile devices in the work place. CEO?s have also taken note that mobile phones can be used in their business as a tool in which to house custom-built apps which increase employee productivity, send email on the go and browse the web with ease. It?s not just the larger enterprises that are taking the smartphone route. Small to medium sized companies are dropping their bulky laptops and turning to Google?s Android and Apple?s iPhone.

Tablets are also making their mark as they present a new mobile way in which to work. Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom 4 and the iPad are being snapped up by businesses intent on empowering their staff to work whilst on the go.

CEO?s and employees are firmly aboard the smartphone and tablet bandwagon, but where does the IT Manager fit into all of this? After all, smartphones and tablets present an entire new platform to manage. It?s all well and good handing out thirty or forty and in some cases, hundreds of smartphones and tablets to all your employees, but have these companies worked out the processes of managing these mobile devices? Problems arise when the CEO receives an email from his/her stressed IT Manager, claiming that it?s near on impossible to manage all these devices because the Android and iPhone operating systems differ. How do they differ? Well, they offer?different capabilities for security and remote management for starters. Even the email platform you use on the phone can affect how you can secure and manage the mobile devices you let into your organization. Therefore, you can imagine the sleepless nights your IT Manager may be having at the thought of securing each and every mobile device that has been handed out to the employees.
