Report: Jaguars release QB David Garrard - Fantasy Sports

Here's some stunning news just five days in front of the first Sunday of the regular season: The Jacksonville Jaguars have cut quarterback David Garrard. So says FOX Sports' Jay Glazer via Twitter. Luke McCown, not first-round rookie Blaine Gabbert, will get the start this weekend against the Tennessee Titans.
Garrard had started 46 of the Jaguars' last 48 games and was coming off a season in which he tallied a career-high 28 touchdowns. However, Garrard signed a six-year, $63 million deal in 2008 with $18 million guaranteed. His 2011 base salary of $7.975 million may have spelled his doom since that's a very high price tag for a QB who seems destined to become a backup at some point this season. FANTASY ANALYSIS: As many have mentioned on Twitter, this move is reminiscent of when head coach Jack Del Rio cut Byron Leftwich just a week before the start of the 2007. That gave Garrard the starting job, and now he's done the same to Garrard in 2011.
The promotion of McCown tells us that Gabbert is nowhere near NFL-game ready. McCown was a fourth-round pick in 2004 and has played for three teams in parts of five seasons. He has spent the past two years with the Jaguars, completing a total of 12 passes in 22 attempts. He's not worth your time in fantasy at the moment, and I have to think the values of wide receiver Mike Thomas and tight end Marcedes Lewis take a hit. Meanwhile, Maurice Jones-Drew is probably going to see a little extra attention due to the lack of respect defenses have for McCown. He'll have to prove his mettle if anyone wants MJD to get a look at something other than eight- or nine-man boxes.
