Lenovo's Launch Of Game Console In China May Raise Questions

For a decade, the Chinese government has imposed a ban on sales of video game consoles. Now, Lenovo has just announced that it will be launching its home video game console iSec in the Chinese market, which will raise many questions. The ban currently holds Microsoft and Sony Corp from releasing their video game consoles in the Chinese market, which is considered to be a market of $5.8 billion.

Edoo Technology, a subsidiary of the computer company giant Lenovo Group, is responsible for the manufacturer of its console iSec. The console will feature gesture like controls, much similar to Microsoft?s very own Kinect. The console is scheduled to be released in September or October. The company?s spokesperson denied commenting when asked whether the company had official permission to release the console into the Chinese market.

The ban for selling video game consoles in the Chinese market was originally imposed in 2000 and has been since effective. The ban came after much pressure from parents who disapproved sales of consoles to their children. If the console by Lenovo makes its way into the Chinese market, it will be against the law, and will give rise to unfairness.

An analyst, Lisa Cosmas Hanson from the game industry said that somehow Lenovo was successful in getting the law passed, while other video game console manufacturers are still fighting to get in the Chinese market. She further added that if the company was already comparing their console with Microsoft?s Kinect, then why is Kinect unable to qualify for release in China? The Ministry of China which looks after the ban law, denied commenting on the matter, even after receiving several emails from other companies asking about Edoo?s console launch.

Edoo claims that its console is not targeted mainly at games. The technology can be used to do several other activities, something that both Microsoft?s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 already offers.? Release of this console will definitely spark anger in the eyes of other manufacturers, who have been trying to get in the Chinese market for nearly a decade.
